About the cemetery

Plan your visit in three steps

  1. Check the seasonal opening hours, especially on Sundays and public holidays.
  2. Use address and directions to choose the right entrance and journey.
  3. Open the cemetery map; locating an individual grave also requires its section, row and grave number.

What makes this cemetery distinctive

Frankfurt South Cemetery opened in 1868 as the replacement for the closed Old Sachsenhausen Cemetery. Its 1896 ceremonial hall was largely destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in 1950; parts of the grounds follow the model of an English landscape garden.

The service yard and ceremonial-hall area are being renewed in 2026. Because a new water line is being installed, some taps are expected to remain without irrigation water until September 2026.

Clear site identity

This website covers the present South Cemetery on Darmstädter Landstraße. The Old Sachsenhausen Cemetery at Brückenstraße/Schifferstraße, closed in 1868, is a different historic site.

Frequently asked questions

What is the visitor address?

The address is Darmstädter Landstraße 229, 60598 Frankfurt am Main. Entrances, public transport and parking are covered under address and directions.

When is Frankfurt South Cemetery open?

Recent city notices take precedence.

See opening hours for details.

Is there an official cemetery map?

Yes. The cemetery map page provides the PDF copy and the official download page.

How do I arrive by public transport?

Bus routes 30, 36, 653 and OF-50 serve Südfriedhof West; route 48 serves Südfriedhof Ost.

Can I park at the cemetery?

A public car park with 90 spaces lies west of the cemetery. Check charging periods, maximum stay, signs and current availability on arrival; other parking symbols in the plan do not have precise map points.

Which entrances matter?

The western main entrance on Darmstädter Landstraße is by the administration and ceremonial hall, with another pedestrian entrance farther south. The southern entrance is on Sachsenhäuser Landwehrweg. The Hainer Weg access is closed to visitors until early 2027.

How do I find a particular grave?

Ask for the section, row and grave number using the person’s name and dates. See grave search for the steps.

Which grave types are available?

coffin choice graves, urn choice graves, lawn urn choice graves with a central memorial area, coffin row graves, urn row graves and lawn urn row graves. The administration provides current availability and terms.

Who is responsible?

City of Frankfurt Green Spaces Office, South cemetery district. Contact details are listed under cemetery administration.

What should I consider when visiting during the construction work?

Do not use the Hainer Weg access, which is closed until early 2027. The western main entrance is the most dependable reference for the administration and ceremonial hall; for grave care, ask about irrigation-water availability in the relevant section before travelling.
